Lionel Butler Obituary

Lionel Wilson Butler “Poke”

On April 7th 2024 Poke went home to the Lord after an extended period of declining health.  Poke was born August 29, 1951 to Woodrow Wilson Butler & Delphia Leona (Duncan) Butler in Millersburg, Ohio.  Poke was one of eleven children. He was proceeded in death by his siblings: Jack, Betty, Jim, Peggy, Sandra and Joel; his father and mother, brother-in-law, James “Red” Howland; and sisters–in-law, Sadie and Nina Butler.  Surviving siblings: Carol and Hal Kaser of Coshocton, Brenda Howland of Millersburg, Carry Witner of Millersburg, and William and Karen Butler of Holmesville.

Poke was a 1969 West Holmes High School graduate and was a member of the Killbuck Township Volunteer Fire Department. He often recalled about getting people out of the houses in Killbuck during the 69 Flood. Poke loved his family dearly and he never met a stranger. He enjoyed talking to everyone. Poke was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed on rainy days being in his wood shop.  He got great pleasure out of playing his Harmonica, Banjo, Dulcimers, but one of his most enjoyed hobbies was cooking. He looked forward to the family reunions. One of his most memorable family reunions was when him and his nephew and mother cooked a Kalua pig in her back yard in the ground all night into the next morning.  He was an avid mushroom hunter but most of all he loved to eat them. Poke had several jobs over the years including: Flexible Company in Millersburg, Shriner Sole Company, Jay Pallet All, Menuez Sand and Gravel, Weisgarber Trucking, Rick Hawkins Lumber and Coshocton Trucking.

The Butler family would like to thank the staff at Majora Lane Nursing Home, Ohio's Hospice LifeCare of Wooster for their love, care, patients, and compassion they had for Poke in the last several months and Alexander Funeral Home for helping with the final arrangements.
